Prerequisite: Spanish I

Course Description: This course focuses on the basic vocabulary and verb conjugation in Spanish as well as cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.  Learners will engage in conversations, provide and obtain information in Spanish, and apply spoken language skills on a variety of topics.

Prerequisite: Spanish I

Course Description: In this class the language learner will expand and elaborate their Spanish vocabulary and demonstrate more conversational ability.  Learners will engage in conversation supporting opinions, describing problems, and will further develop reading and writing skills in Spanish.

Course Description: Learners will converse in Spanish, read authentic text, and write in fluent, advanced Spanish.  They will also demonstrate advanced knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world and cultures.

Prerequisite: none

Course Description: This is an exploratory class taught as an introduction to Spanish people, their customs, their language, and their geography.  Students will be asked to use useful, everyday Spanish phrases.

Course Title:  Junior High Reading Class

Credits: 9 week course

Grade Level:  7-8

Prerequisite: none

Course Description:  This course teaches strategies to achieve reading success through  main idea, details, sequence, cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, and making predictions.   Vocabulary-building strategies through roots, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms, parts of speech and sentence construction are also taught.   The students are required to read a minimum of 500 pages and complete two A/R tests each nine weeks.

Course Title: Reading Strategies

Prerequisite: none

Course Description: This course is designed to help developing readers master the areas of comprehension, vocabulary building, and test-taking skills. Students will study main idea, relevant details, and question/answer relationships. All skills are meant to prepare sophomores for the rigor of upper-class course reading across all content areas. In addition, much time is devoted to ACT/Compass Test preparation in the areas of English, reading, and science as well as preparation for the Nebraska state exams given during junior year.

Course Description: This course is a chronological study of America’s authors and literature.  Poetry, short stories, novels, essays, a review of usage/mechanics, and a review of ACT English, Reading, and Science materials learned in Reading Strategies sophomore year are included.  Tests, quizzes, a MLA research paper, and critical analysis papers will be an integral part of the student’s grade.

Credits: 10 Credits for 2 Semesters

Prerequisite: Permission

Course Description:  Students in this course will study America’s authors and literature including poetry, short stories, novels and essays.  Writing skills are emphasized with the completion of critical analysis papers, a MLA research paper and a review of usage/mechanics.  Tests and quizzes will be an integral part of the student’s grade.

Credits: 10 credits for 2 Semesters (does not meet English graduation requirements)

Prerequisite: keyboarding, permission

Course Description: This course teaches the basic principles of newspaper writing while the student strengthens skills in composition and style and produces a yearbook of quality.  Students are exposed to the basics of typography, photography, and effective written communication.  Students learn body copy writing, caption writing, headline writing as well as page layout style and design and yearbook procedures.

Course Description: In this course, students will read, interpret, summarize, analyze, and evaluate a variety of literary genres.  Students will be exposed to units that include the following types of literature: short stories, non-fiction, drama, novels, and poetry.  Students will write at least two formal essays and be given an opportunity to present  original work or research (individually or a a group) using multimedia resources.

Course Description: This course emphasizes written work, oral communication, and basic English grammar and usage skills.  Students will be exposed to World Literature with the reading of novels, short stories, drama, and non-fiction.  Students will will be present information utilizing oral and multimedia communications techniques and will be required to complete a 5-7 page research paper.

Credits: 5 credits for 1 semester, 3 credits dual credit with Northeast Community College

Prerequisite: ACT score of 18

Course Description: English 1010 is designed to develop writing skills. Students will review English usage and mechanics and write short papers and essays based upon their personal experience and/or assigned readings. The students will also write a research paper using the MLA Style Sheet. All topics must be approved by instructor and must relate somehow to one of the readings in our texts. The course emphasizes the writing process, the basic elements of writing, and different forms of writing.

Course Description: Study and comprehensive reading in English literature from The Elizabethan Age (Shakespeare)  to the present day, including poetry and the essay with works by representative novelists.  A 5-7 page research paper will be completed during the course of the semester, along with various other oral/multimedia presentations.

Course Description: This course is divided into two major areas of study:  literature and grammar/composition.  During literature units, students are exposed to short stories, drama, novel, poetry, essay, and epic.  Grammar units will focus on the eight parts of speech, function and usage of phrases and clauses, identification and usage of sentence types and structures, and punctuation.  Year long activities include vocabulary and the emphasis on reading for pleasure and knowledge.  Composition units will cover paragraph and essay writing.
