MINUTES          SPECIAL BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING              FEBRUARY 19, 2019

The Board of Education held a special meeting on Wednesday, February 19th in the board room at the Battle Creek High School.  This meeting was posted 48 hours prior to this meeting on the school’s website, at both schools, and at the post office before the meeting.  President Jeremy Pochop called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M.  Members present were Lori Mink, Brent Bode, Tammy Bierman, and Paul Kuchar.  Toby Thompson was absent.   Also present was Superintendent Jake Luhr, Principals Jeff Heimes and Kyle Finke, and 2 visitors.   The open meeting law was discussed and posted, and will be followed at every Board meeting.  To start the meeting, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The Board then held discussion about the pros and cons of adding agriculture and FFA to the 2020-2021 school year curriculum.  Mr. Luhr advised the Board about the estimated personnel costs to add this position, along with the estimated range of costs for the agriculture classes and the FFA costs.  Mr. Luhr also advised the Board that a survey had been given to students in grades 7-11 and also parents of students in 7-11.  The surveys covered what activities and hobbies the students were interested in, if they were interested in a high school agriculture program, and if offered, what subject areas would they be interested in.  The parent survey showed overwhelming support that an agricultural education program was needed in our community.

Tammy Bierman made a motion to add agricultural classes and FFA to the 2020-2021 school year curriculum provided that the school hires a teacher to teach agriculture education and FFA.   Paul Kuchar seconded the motion.  On roll call vote, the motion carried with five ayes.

With no further business, Board President Jeremy Pochop adjourned the meeting at 6:31 P.M.
