#BeKind

Happy Friday Everyone!

Many times during and even before the pandemic, Nebraska students, staff, parents, and patrons have been consistently reminded to show kindness.  Every one of us may have our own definition of kindness and our own ideas of what it means to be kind.  Some people may disagree with the idea of always being kind by stating the fact that sometimes you have to say something critical of another person or have to point out a deficiency in someone's performance.  Some may say that there is a time to be rude.  Being rude is the easy way out.  It does not take any effort and it is a sign of weakness and insecurity.  Is it possible to be critical and kind at the same time?  I would say yes, it is possible.  Kindness does not replace honesty.  Kindness does not mean our interactions are always rainbows and lollipops.  It takes effort to be critical and kind at the same time.  When someone is pointing out a mistake or a need to improve performance, it can be communicated with kindness, respect, and dignity.  However, I can't guarantee that the response will reciprocate that same kindness.  But, when you make the effort to show kindness you are demonstrating great self-discipline and strong self esteem.  By being kind, you are showing others that you have done a lot of personal work and have come to a great self-understanding and wisdom.

Happy Friday!
