CLARIFICATION - Notice of Proposed Tax Increase

Many property owners have recently, or will soon, receive a pink postcard in the mail outlining the proposed tax increase from Battle Creek Public Schools.  The information on the postcard is misleading.  An examination of a postcard from Madison County shows the 2021 Taxes incorrectly.  The amount listed for the 2021 Taxes is for the General Fund and Building Fund, taxed at a rate of 0.801416 per $100 of valuation (0.722691 for General and 0.078725 for Building).  The 2021 Taxes DOES NOT include the taxes levied for the Bond Fund, which is at a rate of 0.079005 per $100 of valuation.  This omission shows a drastic under representation of the 2021 Taxes paid.  The 2022 Estimated Taxes shows a figure for the General Fund, taxed at a rate of 0.700342 per $100 of valuation, the Building Fund taxed at a rate of 0.074983, AND the Bond Fund, taxed at a rate of 0.131889 per $100 of valuation.

To clarify, the total taxes for 2021 were set at 0.880421 per $100 of valuation and the total PROPOSED tax rate for 2022 is set at 0.907214 per $100 of valuation.  This is an increase of 3%, or roughly $27 per $100,000 of valuation.

I have not seen a postcard for Pierce County to verify if the information is the same as Madison County.
