BCHS to Construct New Agriculture Science Facility By Grace Wysocki In March, the citizens of Battle Creek voted in favor of a bond issue which will pay for additions to the elementary school campus, renovations to the high school track and field facilities, as well as a new ag science complex at the high school. The details of the projects have not been finalized yet, but the ag science building plans call for a facility of approximately 4,500 square feet to be attached to the west of the current high school building. The project is slated to cost approximately 20 percent of the bond monies. The total estimated cost for all three projects is approximately $7.9 million, with the ag science facility projected to cost between $1.2 and $1.4 million. This new agriculture addition will provide the students with more hands-on learning opportunities in the field. Inside the building, the plan calls for a new shop space, a designated spot for welding, and classrooms. In addition, there will be indoor pens for animals as well as an outdoor pasture area. Agriculture teacher Billy O’Brien states that he is most excited about having a space where he doesn’t have to worry about the carpeting underfoot as well as space to do labs. O’Brien’s current classroom is a carpeted space in the main building, limiting him on what he can have students do. He added, “It will be nice to offer students hands-on experiences with livestock.” Another wonderful aspect of the new facility will be that the program and local FFA chapter will have space to hold large gatherings. Currently, the school has 70 students in grades 7-12 who participate in FFA and meetings are standing room only in O’Brien’s current classroom. During the summer months, the new FFA complex will house student livestock and will serve as a place where youth can work on their fair projects. O’Brien is also hoping that after the building is finished in August of 2023, students will have the opportunity to have Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) nights once a month. These structured experiments and work-based learning opportunities in agriculture, food, and natural resources allow the program to extend beyond the classroom. These nights will give students a chance to come into the building and update their record books. The local FFA chapter, students enrolled in agriculture classes, and O’Brien are very excited for the new facility and all the opportunities it will bring to the Battle Creek High School and to the community.
