McKinley Sue Hanson, daughter of Abbie Weidner and Brandon Hanson, attended Battle Creek Public Schools for all thirteen years of her education. McKinley is a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Battle Creek.
McKinley participated in one act play production for one year and was a member of the yearbook staff for two years. She was involved in student council for three years and was a member of FCCLA for four years. In FCCLA, McKinley served as the vice president of membership during her junior year and competed in the STAR competition. McKinley and her group placed first at districts, receiving gold, and they were the state runners-up in the Chapter Service Display category, which qualified them for nationals in San Diego, a competition they participated in over the summer.
Outside of school, McKinley was the 6th grade CCD teacher at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for the past two years. She also spent last summer earning her CNA license. In her free time, Kinley likes to spend time with her family and friends.
When asked to list a favorite staff member, McKinley listed Mrs. Angela Gray, stating, “She creates a welcoming classroom environment for all of her students and is always willing to help when asked.” Kinley added that she will miss Mrs. Gray next year.
After high school, McKinley plans to attend Florida Atlantic University to major in elementary education. She hopes to also minor in either special education or physical education.


Brodey Vaughn Nelson, son of Julie Nelson, attended Battle Creek Public Schools for all thirteen years of his education.
He participated in basketball for three seasons, and outside of school, Brodey works part time at Hy-Vee.
When asked to name a favorite instructor from his time at BCHS, Brodey listed Mr. Dexter Hanzel, former BCHS math teacher. When asked to name a favorite subject in school, Brodey listed math because “it has always come easy to me.”
After graduation, Brodey plans to attend Northeast Community College. As of right now, he is undecided on a major.


Araina Jade Makelin, daughter of JoLynn and Lucas Makelin, attended Jefferson Elementary in Norfolk from preschool through second grade before going to Stanton Elementary School where she was educated through the eighth grade. Araina came to Battle Creek High School as a freshman.
While at BCHS, Araina was active in FCCLA for two years and speech and drama for one year. She also participated in cheer for one year.
Araina listed her favorite staff member at BCHS as Mrs. Brianna O’Brien, stating that she is “very supportive, helpful and caring.” When asked to name a favorite class, Araina listed Life and Careers taught by Mrs. O’Brien.
Outside of school, Araina enjoys hanging out with her friends and family. She has been employed at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery since November of 2022.
After graduation, Araina plans to attend Northeast Community College to finish her generals; she plans to attend Wayne State College after that to earn a bachelor’s degree in special education.

February AD Leadership Award winners! Big crew this month.


Kaylee M. Weed, daughter of Kelly and Darrell Weed, attended Washington Elementary School for kindergarten and then came to the Battle Creek Public Schools for grades one through twelve.
While at BCHS, Kaylee participated in FCCLA for four years, FFA for two years, and basketball and track for one season each. In FCCLA, Kaylee served as the Vice President of Membership her junior year and was also a district representative.
When asked to name a favorite staff member at BCHS, Kaylee listed Mrs. Jenni Frey, stating, “She helped me through a lot, and she is easy to talk to. She helps me with my homework even if it is not for her class.” She stated that Spanish was her favorite class.
Kaylee stated that her fondest memory of her time at BCHS was attending State FFA her junior year. She said, “I made a lot of memories and got to meet new people.”
Outside of school, Kaylee works part time at the St. John’s Early Learning Center in Battle Creek, a job she has held for the past two years.
After graduation, Kaylee plans to attend Northeast Community College to study early childhood education.


Jakob Dylan Ponto is the son of Nicole and Aaron Wyatt. He has attended Battle Creek Public Schools for all thirteen years of his education.
When asked to name a favorite instructor at BCHS, Jakob listed Mr. Jonah Heng, instructor of Digital Media, a class that designs graphics and makes videos for social media and various activities at the school. Jakob stated that he likes this class because “it is always fun making graphics and designs.”
Outside of school, Jakob enjoys playing baseball, an activity that he participates in during the summer months. Jakob also works part time in the meat department at HyVee.
After high school, he plans to attend Northeast Community College. His goal is to study broadcasting and earn a degree in this field.


Reagan Nathalie Brummels, daughter of Toshia Cox and Daniel Brummels, has attended Battle Creek Public Schools for all thirteen years of her education. She is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Randolph.
Reagan has been a three sport athlete throughout high school, participating in volleyball, basketball and track. She served this past year as both a volleyball and basketball captain. She is a past state track qualifier. In addition, she is a two year member of the dance squad, serving this past year as a captain.
Aside from athletics, Reagan is a four year member of the student council and served this past year as the organization’s president. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society. Over the years, Reagan has earned many awards, including Most Improved Athlete of the Year, Outstanding Artist, and the Student Council Service Award.
Reagan listed her favorite teacher as Mrs. Christine Mettler, stating, “I have so many great memories from her class. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve just loved her fun and goofy personality.”
Outside of school, Reagan has worked at the Battle Creek pool for two years, and she held the position of pool manager for one year. In her spare time, Reagan enjoys watching One Tree Hill and playing with her dog Maverick.
After high school, Reagan plans to attend Florida Atlantic University to major in health sciences. She hopes to one day work as an occupational therapist.


Alexsis May Kersten, daughter of Connie and Matt Kersten, attended Woodland Park Elementary and Bloomfield Elementary before coming to Battle Creek in sixth grade. She attended Battle Creek Public Schools for the remainder of her education. Alexsis is a member of First Christian Church in Norfolk.
Alexsis was active in golf for four seasons, wrestling for one season, and cheer for one year. Aside from athletics, Alexsis was a member of FFA for two years and FCCLA for four years. She has served as Vice President of Public Relations for the FCCLA chapter during this past school year. Her participation for two years in FFA has rewarded her with the Green-Hand Degree. In addition, Alexsis has been awarded the Character and Student of the Month Awards at different times during her years in high school for her academic efforts and high character.
Alexsis listed her favorite staff member as Mrs. Brianna O'Brien, stating, “She has always believed in me and helped me figure out what I wanted to do after high school.” Alexsis named Culinary as her favorite class because she enjoys learning about different foods and learning how to cook. One of Alexsis’s fondest memories from her time at Battle Creek was attending state FCCLA her junior year. She stated, “It was fun to compete and spend time with everyone who made it; it was a good overall experience.”
Outside of school, Alexsis enjoys golfing in her free time and hanging out with friends. She has worked at Goody’s Grille in Battle Creek for one and a half years. She regularly goes to church and attends youth group every Sunday.
After graduation, Alexsis plans to attend Wayne State College to pursue a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

This weekend, FFA members had the opportunity to attend FFA Leadership Conference in Kearney. From listening to speakers to partaking in group activities, our members really dove all in to enhance their skills. Battle Creek FFA was also awarded table of the session.




What a two week span of speech competitions for the Braves! Four meets, seeing numerous other competitors, talent, and teams...wow! Northeast NE is the best! Yesterday, we finish among the best with Brennen Weidner being selected to the all-conference team! Congrats to everyone!
